“The guiding principle behind ju is the idea of a weaker force overcoming a stronger one through the intelligent application of technique, rather than strength or aggression.” – John Danaher
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport centered around grappling and submission holds. The core principles involve taking an opponent to the ground, achieving dominant control, and applying precise techniques to neutralize or submit them.
Originally developed by the Gracie family—most notably Helio and Carlos Gracie—BJJ evolved from traditional Judo and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu. Through innovation and a focus on ground fighting, it became one of the most effective and respected martial arts in the world.
The benefits of Jiu-Jitsu go far beyond the physical. While it’s an excellent workout—burning roughly 550 calories per hour on average—it also develops mental resilience, problem-solving skills, and composure under pressure.
Often compared to chess for its strategy and adaptability, Jiu-Jitsu challenges you to think several steps ahead while staying calm in constantly changing situations. It’s a powerful practice for both physical fitness and mental growth.
