"The guiding principle behind ju is the idea of a weaker (gentler) force overcoming a stronger force through the application of technique, or jitsu, rather than strength and aggression." -J Danaher
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu or BJJ, is a martial art/combat sport focused around grappling and submission holds. The paramount principles are taking the opponent to the ground, gaining a dominant position and using applied techniques to submit our opponent.
BJJ was initially developed by the Gracie clan, notably brothers Helio and Carlos Gracie after learning Judo and Japanese Jiu-jitsu techniques from Mitsuyo Maeda in 1917 as he traveled through Rio. It became its own martial art through innovations, adaptation and emphasizing ground techniques more than its Judo roots.
